10 Tips for New Cat Owners

A new cat brings curiosity, play and companionship. A little preparation before the first day makes settling in easier for everyone.

Start strong with a comfortable home, good habits and a little patience for your new cat.

1. Set up a quiet welcome space

Choose one room with food, water, a litter box and a cozy hiding place. Let your cat explore at their own pace instead of introducing the entire home at once.

2. Book a veterinary visit

Ask a veterinarian about vaccines, parasite prevention, microchipping and the best nutrition for your cat’s age and health.

3. Keep litter boxes welcoming

Place boxes in calm, accessible spots away from food and water. Scoop frequently and introduce changes in litter gradually.

4. Create a reliable feeding routine

Choose a complete diet appropriate for the cat’s life stage, offer fresh water and measure portions based on veterinary guidance.

5. Provide a scratching spot

A sturdy scratching post or pad near favorite resting areas gives cats a better outlet than furniture. Reward interest in the post.

6. Make play part of the day

Try short sessions with wand toys, puzzle feeders or small balls. Put away strings and other toys that could be swallowed when playtime ends.

7. Offer places to climb and hide

Cats often enjoy an elevated perch, a window view or a covered bed. Let them choose when to approach people.

8. Begin gentle grooming early

Introduce the brush slowly and handle paws briefly with treats or praise. Stop if your cat becomes stressed; a professional can help with coat care.

9. Keep the home safe

Secure window screens, store medicines and cleaning products away, and check that houseplants are safe for cats. Lilies are especially dangerous.

10. Be patient with the transition

Some cats relax in hours; others need weeks. Consistency, calm interactions and positive reinforcement build trust over time.
