10 Tips for Successfully Moving with Pets
Cardboard boxes and unfamiliar spaces can be exciting for people and stressful for pets. Use a predictable routine and a few simple safeguards to make the transition gentler.
1. Update your pet’s identification
Check that collar tags and microchip registration have your current phone number before the move.
2. Prepare a travel kit
Pack food, water, bowls, medication, cleanup supplies, a leash and familiar bedding where you can reach them easily.
3. Keep a regular routine
Try to maintain normal feeding, walking and rest times throughout the move.
4. Choose a secure moving-day spot
A quiet closed room or trusted caregiver can keep pets away from open doors, heavy furniture and unfamiliar movers.
5. Use a suitable carrier or restraint
Travel with a secure carrier or vehicle restraint suited to your pet. Do not let an animal roam freely in the car.
6. Set up one room first
Place food, water, litter or pads and familiar objects in a calm room at the new home.
7. Introduce the new space slowly
Let your pet explore at their own pace, keeping close supervision near exits and windows.
8. Watch for stress signals
Hiding, unusual vocalization or appetite changes may happen during adjustment. Ask your veterinarian about persistent or serious symptoms.
9. Pet-proof the new address
Check screens, fences, cords, small objects, plants and cleaning chemicals before granting full access.
10. Make time for reassurance
Short play sessions, walks and quiet companionship help your pet associate the new place with good experiences.
