Invisible Dangers in Your Pet’s Food Bowl
Food and water bowls are easy to overlook during the daily routine. Keeping bowls, scoops and storage areas clean helps reduce germs and cross-contamination.
Wash your hands after feeding
Use soap and water after handling pet food, treats, feeding dishes or waste. Help young children do the same, and supervise their interaction with pet food.
Clean bowls on a regular schedule
Wash dishes with detergent and warm water, then rinse and dry. Clean water bowls daily and wash food bowls after use, especially after wet or raw foods.
Keep food-preparation areas separate
Use dedicated scoops and cleaning tools for pet supplies. Avoid setting pet bowls on counters where human meals are prepared.
Store kibble and treats carefully
Keep food in its original bag inside a closed container, in a cool, dry space. Check best-by dates and discard anything with an unusual odor or appearance.
Treat raw-food handling with extra care
Raw diets can carry harmful microbes. Speak with your veterinarian about nutrition and safety before changing diets, especially in homes with children or people at higher risk of illness.
Notice changes in your pet
